Pet Anesthesia

If you are looking for a veterinarian that can provide your pet with the surgery he needs, we at Pet Medical Center of Westerville are here to help. Our pet hospital in Westerville, OH, has different measures in place to help ensure your furry friend’s safety and ease your mind while he is undergoing surgery. Read on for more information about pet anesthesia why it is used:

What Types of Anesthesia Are Used?

Different kinds may be used for pets who are having surgery done, including:

•             General anesthesia: More commonly used for pets

•             Local anesthesia: May be used for certain procedures

General anesthesia causes your pet to be unconscious during surgery so that he is unaware of what’s going on. This helps keep him safe and calm. The local type only numbs the area around the surgical site. Pets won’t feel anything but they’re conscious enough to be aware of their surroundings.

Is Pet Anesthesia Safe?

Mostly. Most pets can be safely sedated with general anesthesia in order to have pet surgery. We evaluate pets beforehand to check for underlying conditions or acute conditions that may affect their ability to safely undergo anesthesia.

There are a few risks but these are rare. To prepare your pet, we’ll likely ask you to avoid feeding your pet the night prior to surgery to ensure an empty stomach. This helps reduce the risk of him vomiting while he is unconscious.

What Happens When It Wears Off?

Your pet might be sluggish for a bit and might not have the same amount of energy they usually have. This is only temporary, however, and your pet should return to his normal self after a little less than a day.
